Tancredo walks out in middle of MSNBC interview

Tancredo got up and walked off the set before completing his interview after being confronted with the truth. I suggest just watch the video because it demonstrates how this hate mongering Republican is nothing but a coward.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Tancredo is nothing short of a racist because I have heard his rhetoric many times which is why I came to that conclusion.

Tancredo, what a suck-titty-baby. My God! He was giving up before he was called out on his draft dodging and just used it as an opportunity to walk off because he knew he would be able to defend his half truths and lies.

This is how the right wing operates, if they cannot defend themselves against FACTS then they try to spin your facts into a negative outcome that is totally beyond logic. Or they retreat like the cowards that they are deep inside. Have you ever noticed that Republicans come onto political talk shows with ONE talking point and they give that same answer to EVERY question asked them even when the subject changes, and they get angry as hell when they cannot bully the person asking the question to give them full credibility and swallow their tripe. They are single minded and do not have the mental capabilities or flexibility to adapt or operate on different levels. In conclusion, Republicans and especially Conservative Republicans are immature whelps who must have their way no matter how badly their ideas harm the people that they don't give a rat's ass about...The American people. Lil' Tommy T. is an embarrassment to Americans and males everywhere....And a FRAKKKIN" COWARD!!!

In 2002, a story about a high school honor student named Jesus Apodaca appeared in the Denver Post. The story was about how he couldn't afford to go to the University of Colorado because, since his family had brought him illegally from Mexico when he was twelve, he would have to pay out-of-state tuition. Tancredo saw the story and contacted the INS to try and get him deported. I'm not sure whether I knew enough about Tancredo to hate him before I heard this story, but I certainly hated him after that.

jay, the topic is about Tancredo walking off an interview. The subsequent posts then are all about bashing him for being a bigot, a hater, a racist, a coward, a draft-dodger, etc, etc, etc. Right? Was I supposed to join in the Tancredo bashing? Would a post similar to that have made you happy, jay? Jeeze...sorry I didn't want to jump on that bandwagon with you.

I grabbed onto that little jewel because although Tancredo may be all those things you say that he is, I firmly believe that NO ILLEGAL ALIEN should be given IN-STATE COLLEGE TUITION. Why? Because they are not legal citizens of the US let alone the state that they live in.

Hate the man you may, but there are many out there who agree with some of the tenets he espouses. The day he is voted out of office is the day that you can tell me that the majority of you disagree.

Hey, Jay and TR, it's nice to know there are some sane people in CD 5. I remember when Jay F. (Sorry, can't remember his last name) ran in 2006. I can't believe anyone who paid attention actually voted for Lamborn over Jay. At least Jay was smart. Oh, well, up here, we are becoming more Democratic and hopefully CD 6 will turn blue in a couple of years.

Anyway, to Susan, Tancredo was the congressman from Colorado's 6th Congressional District. He paid a shrink to write a note to get him out of the draft even though he supported the Vietnam war. Despite that, he claimed to support the military and vets, and voted against them every time (but he did vote for the no-bid contracts!) He voted straight NRA even after a high school in his district (Columbine) was the site of the worst high school shooting in US history (and said it was okay because "people have short memories"). He made a name for himself fighting against immigration (and stated he wanted to halt legal immigration while he was running for president) but he had actually hired illegal immigrates to work on his house. He would not meet with constituents unless they were major donors. He would not debate his opponents.

Basically, he is a coward and a hypocrite who cannot support what he spews. I am not surprised he walked off the set when his lies were pointed out to him.

Your not going to insult me or the people who fought for this country and just have me sit there acting like you didn't. Good for him. We need more people to do the same thing. Jason Burnham, post #1.24:

"The man was insulting. He asked him to apologize or he would leave."

Tancredo ran away because; the young veteran called him on dodging a war that he supported, with a doctors note from his phys-co doctor saying he was to SAD to be drafted.

"Your not going to insult me or the people who fought for this country..."

I saw the video, the young veteran did not insult people who fought for this country in any way, shape or form, nor did he insult Tancredo. What he did do was to expose Tancredos hypocrisy and cowardice, which Tancredo proved by running away, instead of manning up and facing the truth about himself; with the young veteran - who did serve his country, and had every right to call Tancredo on his cowardice and phony hypocrisy.

"Personally, had the guy said that and I was in the same room the camera would be going off the air and the doors would be locked. I have no faith in the Government."

As usual people who don't know what the hell they are talking about, or even who they are talking about other than he has an R next to his name so I must defend him. He is not currently holding any office, hasn't said if he is running for anything in 2010 yet though has hinted at running for gov or sen, or maybe holding out to run for president again. And you can stop taking up for him because he may not be running as an R anymore, he is trying to get the backing of one of the "other" minor right wing parties.

It isn't so much as sticking up for him it's that I detest the Democrat Party and hate Liberals so much that I pretty much will go with anybody against them. I admit it's a fault of mine and I do try to work on it. It started with Clinton and after Reid and Pelosi's "We Lost" campaign where they traded our soldiers welfare for votes it became finalised. There is people in the Democrat Party that I do support. Senator Feinstein comes to mind, Vice President Biden, and other honest decent Democrats who actually put their values before their Political Career. There have been some Republicans that I have come to detest too. Republicans like Sony Bono's widow who say one thing and then do another.

The best example would be that there is two teams playing on TV. You are not a fan of either but one of them you hate so you end up cheering for the one you normally wouldn't care for. I've been on attack mode since yesterday and as the weekend wears down I'll tone it down. Seems to happen every weekend.

Tripper @1.23 -- look at anything Tancredo has said about Hispanics; there is your proof. If that isn't enough, look at his membership in hate groups (according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.) Look at the statements he made about "white culture" during the last presedential campaign. Unfortunately, I have been forced to follow his filth and his career (I live in his CD) so I am well aware of how vile his words and actions have been.

Jason @ 1.24:

Your not going to insult me or the people who fought for this country and just have me sit there acting like you didn't. Good for him.

Actually, he was just pointing out that Tancredo NEVER served in the military and was insulting a veteran. Tancredo wants us to believe he is some kind of patriot and some kind of military supporter when, in fact, he voted against military personnel and veterans all the time. Tancredo tried to lie about how veterans felt -- and made the mistake of stating it to a veteran. He got caught and called on it. I thought Tancredo had insulted the veteran and not the other way around.

Personally, had the guy said that and I was in the same room the camera would be going off the air and the doors would be locked.

Tripper, I have given you ten references and I can get you more. If you still don't think Tancredo is a racist, maybe you should look at yourself. He is openly hostile to anyone who is not WASP (funny coming from someone of Italian descent and raised as a Catholic.)

when they are here by illegal means.

Obviously you didn't follow the Republican primary debates. Tancredo wants to stop LEGAL immigration. My husband was a naturalized citizen and he was a career Naval officer. He did a lot more for this country than Tancredo could ever hope to do. Tancredo was a draft-dodger, even though he supported the Vietnam war (he was just too chicken to fight.) I was glad my husband did not live long enough to see HIS congressman declare that my husband did not have a right to be in this country.

I do not watch Fox News, but I do believe they love this country MUCH more than organizations such as the SPLC.

I totally disagree. The SPLC backs up what they say. They work for the rights of people who have little or no voice. Fox has gone to court to prove they have the right to lie. Fox schills for large corporations and political operatives. They care more about themselves than real Americans.

Cat, you should watch the clip again. It wasn't the facts that angered Tancredo, it was the personal attack. Now, I don't know Tancredo's background all that well or the reason(s) he didn't go to Vietnam, but the other guy was being a jerk, and not sticking to the facts. Should Tancredo have left? Does he support them, or doe they support him?

Since he is a keynote speaker for them and praises them, I say he definately supports them. (And, yes, they support him -- a support he greatfully accepts.)

Why did you find that odd?

Because you stated you "fought" and not that you "served." Active Duty (and reserves for that matter) serve first. I have heard people who work for Blackwater, and others of that ilk, use the word "fight" as a way to cover up the fact that they were not military. I'm glad I asked and not assumed. I fully support the military and resent the contracted, over-paid scum over there who are taking my money and not giving back what their companies are paid to do.

I like Tancredo. I like people who goes against the mob mentality so he can remind everyone that there is an existing law that we should follow.

I like people who takes the hit of nasty hatred who wants to turn our country into a free for all mess, in the name of compassion and what have you.

I dont like mecha. I dont like people who claims victimhood while preying on our children, despite using our tax money to raise their own children.

We have to be vanguards of our future. If we let go of our morals and rules, America will cease to exist as a civilization.

Well, Tancredo has always been a Right-wing loon (much like the dwindling 15% of the GOP).

However, neither Party is serving the interests of the majority of Americans anymore.

Both have sold out to Corporate America, Wall Street, Agribusiness, and the Military Industrial Complex (Republicans 30 years ago, Democrats recently).

Is it too much to ask, as a hard-working American citizen, to have a new party that represents the other 95% of us?

He has been a keynote speaker for both the KKK and AN?

Forgive me, I should have been more explicit. I meant hate groups like KKK and AN. They are not the only racists groups in the US.

He called Miami a third world country. He accused the pope of encouraging illegal immigration to boost US Catholic membership. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Tancredo)

Tancredo claimed he was speaking for all the veterans.

Tancredo said that all of the veteran organizations that he had spoken told him that. There is a difference.

When it was pointed that he was debating a veteran, Tancredo, coward that he is, cut and run.

Actually, if you watch the clip, you'll see he was angered by the personal insult.

He supported the Vietnam War, but he paid a psychiatrist to get him a medical out from the draft.

Wrong again, quit distorting the facts. Nothing supports your accusation that he PAID a psychiatrist to get him a medical deferment.

He claims he supports the military and the vets, but he has voted against the military members and the vets every chance he could.

    Examples?

Oh, Tacitus, you would think by now you'd realize I don't make these things up. May I recommend Google? Don't forget, I'm in his district so I am aware of his record.

And, he very well may have spoken to a couple of rich vets who don't need to use VA, but he did make it sound like he was speaking for the majority of vets. This is simply not true. When he was confronted on his lies, he ran -- just like he did during Vietnam. I guess he had another panic attack.

Do you people think this poor man is related to the devil? Sure sounds like it by the statements you are making.

He is just a Republican with his own mindset. Give him a break. He is no worse than Mr. Obama who lied to get his job, or Bush who lied to get us into war, or Clinton who did not have sex, or Nixon who thought he was above the law.

Don't get so caught up in yourselves and your petty discussions that you forget to remember all the rest of them who lied to us and have brought us to this rotten level. There is plenty of crap to go around. Tom Trancredo is just a guy who blew up. He did not shoot anyone, did he? He just spoke his own mind about things he believed in. He took exception to the interview direction and left. Pretty simple, in the long run.

Look, you Guys; Tom Tancredo is against illegal immigrants. Period. His parents emigrated to America. He does not hate all immigrants. He is aware, very aware of the ramifications of illegal immigrants and the fact that the "new America" is not integrating new immigrants but rather allowing them and encouraging them to stick to the old nation of their past. Remembering our culture is awsome. Learning new cultures is even better.

While he did ask if the muslims could relate if Mecca were attacked and destroyed, he has been trying to push the envelope, trying to get Americans to think for themselves. Shock value.

Some of the people who give politicians money, are not people with whom they necessarily agree with, but the money spends. If you look at his entire history in the legislature, whether state or federal government, he has picked the issue of illegal immigration as his "cause". No one, or few paid attention in government, that is until 9/11. Now he is being listened to by a greater number of people, some of them his fellow politicians. He has crossed lines on occasion if a Dem was in agreement with him and he has angered a few Republicans because they did not include his "cause" in their repetoire.

So, to those of you who have jumped on the "dump on Tom Tancredo bandwagon", you really do not know what you are talking about. It is o.k. though because you are Americans and have the right to disagree.

As for KEEPING IT REAL, I am not crazy as you stated. I am a person who disagrees with you. Your insults say much about your inability to speak rationally when someone offers a differing opinion. Have a great day.

During the Vietnam era, many people were able to get shrinks to write letters attesting to the mental illness of people. Many doctors were against the war and against the draft and were more than willing to help people get out of it. I was too young to have friends that did this, but my husband had several friends who went this route. My husband thought it was hypocritical and he refused to follow them (although he could have.)

If Tancredo really did have a problem with mental illness, I could really feel for him. Unfortunately, he voted against funding for mental illness, so I have trouble believing that he understands just how devastating it can be. (I spent decades as a mental health professional, so I do understand just how serious it is.)

As for Tancredo's immigrant roots, I believe it was his grandparents who immigrated here, not his parents. And, FYI, he stated he wanted a moratorium on LEGAL immigration. My husband served more than 20 years and did more for the security of our country than Tancredo could hope for -- and he immigrated to this country as a preschooler. If my husband had been alive when Tommy T made that statement, he might have gone ballistic and made a serious statement to the media!

No, FredC! They should challenge him to come back every night. Ed could make it his sign off. Invite him to come back with the names of those veterans who complain about the VA system.

Because he isn't a man... Like almost all the Bush administration "warriors", Tancredo snuck out of military service.

Talks the talk... but doesn't walk the walk...

                But you have to remember

These guys demonstrate the same characteristic: they would never subject themselves to the same conditions they expect of others. It comes from the delusion that they are so valuable that they should not be wasted in war and should not suffer the same lack of priviliege and exposure to danger as the rest of us. Cheney got 5 deferments and despite all their harping about the military, Dick and W quietly imposed many hardships on our veterans.

If this is a lie, it is an insult and Tancredo has every right to be offended.

But if this is the truth, Tancredo has to live with his past and is certainly not well placed to pull any "rightful indignation" stunt on a veteran.

Tri in TN, regarding post #5

"I have no idea who Tancredo is, but it looked to me like the younger guy insulted him, refused to apologize for the insult, and that's why Tancredo left."

Tancredo is a guy who supported the Vietnam War, but managed to duck the draft because he was SAD; and so he ran away from fighting in a war that he supported.

The younger guy was a veteran who called Tancredo out, and when Tancredo was confronted with the truth - she...... ah, I mean he, ran away from the statement of his past history.

So when and if anyone talks to Tancredo, be very careful not to bring up his past or else he will become very frightened, and run away like a little girl.

As a Republican student activist Tancredo spoke in support of the Vietnam War. After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado he became eligible to serve in Vietnam in June 1969. Tancredo has said he went for his physical, telling doctors he had been treated for depression, and eventually got a "1-Y" deferment.

Interviews with more than two dozen people - including current and past colleagues of Tancredo, immigration activists, political analysts and strategists - show Tancredo is not easily discounted as an extremist loudmouth.

"Right after 9/11, Tom Tancredo was pushing many of the ideas that bona fide white-supremacist groups were pushing," said Mark Potok, director of intelligence for the Southern Poverty Law Center in Alabama, which monitors hate groups.

Immigrants who cling to their language, heritage and loyalties while living in the U.S. threaten to turn the nation into a "Tower of Babel," he said.

He rails against what he calls "the cult of multiculturalism," or "people who are intent upon dividing America up into cultural enclaves, who are intent upon essentially minimizing the importance of Western civilization."

Those who wish Tancredo had never entered politics can blame Fidel Castro. Tancredo was in eighth grade at St. Catherine's Elementary School in Denver when the Cuban dictator came to power. He took turns acting as Castro and as an interviewer for a class assignment.

"I loved doing this. Maybe it was the theatricality of it," he said. "Maybe that's what got me into politics in general."

Recently he suggested that the U.S. should consider bombing Mecca in response to an Islamic terrorist strike on U.S. soil; demanded that the government drop the design for a Pennsylvania memorial to Sept. 11 victims because its crescent shape is a symbol of Islam; voted against federal aid to Hurricane Katrina victims, calling Louisiana officials corrupt; and said that New Mexico was improperly using money obtained from declaring a state of emergency over immigration.

For more of a great article on Tom see link below:

If what you say is true then I applaud Mr. Trancredo. Louisiana politicians are corruplt. They have mismanaged monies given them for repairing or rebuilding their levies for years. This was documented and brought to light when the storm broke and the levies failed. They are directly responsible for the many deaths attributed to Katrina. New Orleans is going to sink, in the long run because it is below sea level and nothing they are doing can resolve that, short of moving a mountain down there and building up the ground to absorb water.

New Mexico has long had a history of mob connections so it does not surprise me that monies are being used improperly. The state has done little to help the indigenous peoples of the state, while doing nothing to help curtail the illegals who use the state as a stopping ground before inundating the rest of America.

Bombing Mecca is really out there and I cannot applaud that action, if that is the truth. More people would be hurt, in their hearts, than the terrorists who thrive on violence and mayhem. I am not certain that that is his intention, overall.

Muslim religion should not be the overriding feature of an emblem remembering our fallen from 9/11. This nation is and has been more christian than not, the features of christianity, self respect, faith in yourself and your abilities, and an open heart, are inherent in our nation's people. We must hold to them, even as we turn from religion, a pity that.

To those who are villifying this man; what a pity that you have not found a better use for your words than trying to bring down Mr. Tancredo.

The interview wasn't going well for him from the beginning.

Vouchers for the VA? come on it's still paid for by the Government!!

As it turns out he got a deferment for depression BUT voted against the Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act of 2008

and of course he is completely against ANY form of government health care even medicare, oh wait...why did he vote NO on requiring negotiated Rx prices for Medicare part D? His statement.

Under the guise of negotiation, this bill proposes to enact draconian price controls on pharmaceutical products. Competition has brought significant cost savings to the program. The current system trusts the marketplace, with some guidance, to be the most efficient arbiter of distribution.

The one program that Bush put in place, is well gee, ok JUST LIKE IT IS!

This guy is an idiot and I am glad he no longer serves in the US House.

Ok, so I watched the video. I am amazed at how anyone can support the treatment tancredo recieved. "I'm a veteran, I didn't get a deferement becuase I was too depressed to fight in a war I supported..." Yeah, I would have walked out too. The guy who said that had no real argument so he resorted to a personnal attack.

This is the problem with the health care debate. No one wants to talk about the proposals they want to attack everyone who does not agree with them.

Tancredo was saying, "Veterans are always telling me...". So Moulitsas says, "Hey, I am a veteran! Don't give me that bullpuckey!" And then Moulitsas went on to count coup on Tancredo for supporting a war... as long as others have to do the fighting.

Look at all the macho-men who led America into a useless war that is still going on today. Not a single veteran among them. Anyone who thinks thats a coincidence... isn't a veteran.

So, what Tancredo is saying that millionaire vets did not use the VA. You need to understand, if you didn't give thousands of dollars to his campaign, he didn't speak to you. He wouldn't even show up at community meetings or debates without being paid.

My husband served for more than 20 years and he didn't support that piece of scum. I've spent more than 50 years as a dependent and I campaigned for his opponents.

Repoman, what is the true from your point o view, an insult? do you feel insulted when some one tell you the true? only if you are a right wing nut republican (Rich and white and maybe from the shout) cause they have they OWN true, sadly they really believed they true, which is far away from it, it is really the true, kind of confusing no? are you offended by the true? or the only true is "your" true? maybe, but are you blind and deft too and haven't really see the interview?

jfxgillis, nope, not a draft dodger, in fact I am an active duty service member with 6 deployments and that has no real bearing on the conversation.

While I do not much like Tancredo there is no reason for someone to construct a personal attack against someone because they were disqualified from military service. A person can assume he faked it but only he and his doctor really know the truth. If he suffers from depression, like millions of Americans, then he should not serve in the armed forces.

When someone uses an insult to validate their point of view they lose credibility. There are a number of things the other person could have said. He chose to make his point using an insult about a socially stigmatized condition. He could have said, "Mr. Tnacredo, you have never served and yet you speak as though you are the foremost authority. I am a vet and quite pleased with my care". Even that in ancedotal. We all know people who are pleased as puch with their insurance. Some on medicaid, private, VA..ect...we all know people who are getting screwed by their insurance providers...medicaid, medicare, va and the private insurance providers.

Comments that are used to insult people who disagree with you only derail the debate from what is really important. The merits of the reform as offered by the united state congress.

Proudindependant, Clearly you know nothing about me. I do not know what the color of my skin would have to do with anything and I fell disinclined to reveal why demographic information...as I have consistently done in the past.

Am I rich? I think so and it has nothing to do with money. I do not link the richness of my life with the level of wealth I have accumalted. However since you know I am in the military it should not take you long to come to the conclusion I am not wealthy.

When someone uses an insult to validate their point of view they lose credibility

It wasn't an insult--it was the truth, which is why that pussy stormed off.

You know, that's a good point. And maybe Tancredo would've been better off saying that instead of what he did say.

As for Markos being polite in his response, have you watched these political gasbag shows? You don't get points for politeness.

And so many of the Republicans have been such dicks for so long, and as recently as this morning, that a bunch of us on the other side of the aisle have recently taken to cheering on folks like Markos and Congressman Alan Grayson when they finally start throwing dickery right back.

If Tancredo doesn't want to get treated like a dick, he should stop acting like one.

Progressives come off as extreme only because the conservatives in control of the Republican party have hammered on that theme for decades. The "Big Lie" is very effective as a political tool.

The tool of malcontents and traitors, but effective.

                  Some liberals are extreme, though.

I recently attended a green engineering conference, already making me one of the more conservative people in the room. But one lady kept talking about population control. What the hell?

Or the oceanography teacher I had back in college who insisted that urban dwellers had to be forced to buy electric cars. When presented with Greenpeace rejects like that, I use economic theory like a bludgeon.

Those who lack perspective are the ones most convinced that they are right and everyone else is wrong.

It is true there are extremists in every walk of life.

Our challenge, as a nation, is for the middle to stop allowing the extremes to dominate the discussion.

excellent post...and commentary. To me this sordid incident is but a reflection of the deeper sentiment among some of those on the right; that they are somehow different/better than the average man. That they can operate under a different set of rules.

We must continue to remind them their not and they cant.

Americans should begin voting out and not electing any candidate whom used a deferral [without a legitimate reason] to dodge serving his country in a time of war.

Anybody unwilling to serve his country in a time of war is unfit to serve the people!

I believe during two active on-going wars this is a sediment all Americans can agree upon, and we should begin calling out these unfit individuals as unworthy to speak about American values and policies.

Obama was a child when the draft was ended. When he was old enough to serve, there was no active war and no draft. This is different than someone paying a psychiatrist for some bogus excuse -- especially when that person was in favor of a war in which they refused to serve. And, if he truly had a mental health issue, why did he oppose funding for mental health issues?

TheSpirit: There are plenty of liberals out here who think the draft was a good thing and that it should be reinstated for ALL U.S residents, not just males. It would do all young people a world of good to serve something beyond their own interests for a couple of years. For one thing, after the Vietnam debacle, a draft would make it more difficult for Congress to send young people off to war. It's too easy to do the wrong thing with an all volunteer army.

                    Absolutely!

We should 'draft' all high school seniors for a minimum of 1 year of public service. That could include the military, volunteering, peace corp, etc.

Far too many people grow up in their home towns and have never experienced how different people live and work. This should open their eyes to the world beyond what they've known while instilling the importance of their participation in their communities.

I have to disagree with you on this point. An unlimited fighting force is just too great of temptation for power crazed leaders to resist. They could care less about who is serving and the wealthy and privileged would find a way out anyway. If we spent half the money that we spend on war on peace instead, perhaps we wouldn't be fighting wars constantly. We have made our own bed and we will have to suffer the consequences so long as we continue to play the role of world cop. We always come out losers, but we will keep pretending that we're winning. The wars are nothing more than another con that the government constantly puts on the backs of America's youth. We are not preparing for our future. We are preparing for our demise.

History doesn't support your argument. The U.S. is constantly embroiled in pointless conflicts which do little more than destroy lives and consume vital resources. And since when has Congress feared the voters? They constantly fund these wars, kiss the a$$e$ of corporate America, and refuse to hold the rich and powerful politicos and bankers accountable for their crimes against the people. Besides that, how could the U.S. possibly afford universal conscription? It is totally naive to believe that the U.S. Government would not use whatever resources are left to their their disposal. When those resources are human lives it is dangerous to give them universal access. Most members of the National Guard never thought they would end up on the front lines in Iraq, but Bush and Cheney viewed these patriots as nothing more than warm bodies to serve their insatiable taste for aggression. It was reported that before the end of their administration, Liz Cheney was working for a think tank whose primary purpose was to expand the wars into Syria and Iran. Some people view war as opportunity, especially when their lives are not on the line. As long as war is an option, peace will not exist.

Before anyone calls me a chikenhawk, I served 23 yrs Army to include Desert Storm. If the man was diagnosed with clinical depression by at least 3 doctors and just not him saying he suffered from it, then it was a valid deferment. The idiot at Ft Hood was also depressed and look what he did. I sure as hell would not want to be in a foxhole with a clinically depressed soldier holding an M16. But for this yutz to just storm out instead of completing the interview shows he is also a coward, another kind of soldier I would not have wanted to serve with, not when my life would have been on the line.

During the Vietnam conflict, it was common for people to pay a psychiatrist to get them out of the draft. It was a very contentious issue and many doctors were willing to do just that. My husband chose to serve, because it was his duty, but really resented his rich friends who paid to get out of the draft.

A valid argument can be made that any soldier in a foxhole under fire is "clinically depressed".

How many clinically depressed people answered their draft notices and went off to war anyway? We'll never know, but I'd wager it's in the thousands. Depression was a "new" malady in the 60's, and people like Tancredo used it to avoid combat service in Viet Nam, Dubya used family connections, while others just moved to Canada. To say Bill Clinton is in the same category as Tancredo is to purposely avoid the fact that Bill Clinton didn't build his political carreer on advocation for war while doing all he can to avoid war. He recieved a deferement like thousands and thousands of other college students, while not advocating for war. BIG difference, conservatives.

The bulk of conservatives are all too eager to call for war - but stand aside and offer to hold the coats of others while others do the fighting and dieing.

It wasn't new. It was stigmatized, so it was a source of shame and left untreated for the most part.

Following the Columbine High School shootings (and Columbine High School is in his district), Tancrado voted with the NRA every time he could. When asked about this contradiction, he responded, "It's a long time before the election and people have a very short memory." There were a lot of ways he could explain his votes, but to have such disgust for his constituency says a lot about who this man is.

Yep, he did. I can think of a dozen different ways he could have explained his vote that would not have insulted his constituents. (But, he did get re-elected, several times. I never forgot and worked on most of the campaigns of the people who ran against him.)

Speaking of the "Code of Honor", any code or guidlines are only as good as the adherence and enforcement of the code.

NEWSVINE is sorely lacking in that regard as a relative few are allowed to post very insulting vulgar comments that are more in line with what you would find in adult magaizines instead of a respectable news site.

We all know who these repeat offenders are by the nature of their posts, so the obvious question is: Why are they allowed to post such trash? Allowing that only detracts from what this site purports to be. We should demand NEWSVINE staff ban these offenders from this site.

Goldwater also told a Catholic pope when he chastized the world for over population "You no playa the game, you no maka the rules". And I will never forget the front page picture of him flipping off a disrespectful media.

I admired Goldwater for his independant streak - that he largely kept hidden till retired - not his intellect.

When he made his run for the presidency he simply toed the party line and paid the price. He was clearly overmatched against J.F.K.

After retirement he made many memorable remarks, but while in office he was a loyal party politician to a certain degree.

He was still overmatched, but in Johnson's case it was a political mismatch.

Guys, keep in mind that while Johnson was not well loved by the general populous he was revered in government because he supposedly was an excellent speaker and so they, in government had a tendency to back him.

Kennedy did not do as much to promote the war as did Johnson, once he took over the job of president. Much was cloaked in secrecy at that time and ultimately led to Nixon shooting students at Kent State.

Kennedy was the first president I had voted for, but I became disallusioned with all the hypocrisy that was ongoing and would not have voted for him a second time, regardless of the Camelot that was promoted. It was more like Peyton Place.

It was a time when the American people wanted to be listened to and the government refused to hear the messaage. Much like now. I wonder if the "powers that be" are any smarter now, and their hearing any better?

He wanted to leave because he got caught with his pants down when he realized the Democrat he was talking to was a veteran. He found his excuse to leave when he decided to take a general statement about draft-dodging personally for some reason.

It wasn't a general statement about draft dodging. It was a reference to Tancredo's actual deferment. If he were not ashamed of it, why didn't he stay to justify himself? He went on the show to bash government-run health care and apparently forgot that he had a vulnerable spot.

However, him and alot of a Republicans I think realize the reality of the situation as well. When you have very large government programs that people are relying on, people will vote for a party that will continue, expand, and promise such government services.

Just because Republicans are acting like children, that does not make Democrats automatically correct or on the right path.

He's so right. The Republicans have backed themselves into a corner where they build their campaigns on fear of the government. they repeate ad nauseum that the government and nothing it does works, so government programs that DO work terrify the Republicans. Meanwhile they drive on roads built by marxist socialist fascist government while we're kept safe by the world's largest commie big brother run military.
